Hunter Valley Grammar School evolved from an audacious idea by Newcastle businessmen to a vision, and later, the reality which provided the Hunter Valley community with a quality independent, non-denominational and co-educational school. From 32 Acres of Australian bush the visionaries set about the enormous task of planning, building and creating a new independent School in the Maitland suburb of Ashtonfield.

Hunter Valley Grammar School opened its doors to 110 students on January 31, 1990. Later that year, when the NSW Governor, Rear-Admiral Peter Sinclair AC, officially opened the School on Thursday November 8, enrollments had increased to 190 and Foundation Principal, John Weeks, announced stage two of the School’s development. HVGS had risen from the bush in Ashtonfield and was here to stay!
John Weeks remained Principal for seven years building strong foundations, enabling the School to grow and develop from humble beginnings to establish itself as a leading independent and co-educational school of NSW.
When Michael Clapper was appointed Principal in 1998, the school had over 700 students enrolled. HVGS graduates were spreading their wings and the School had developed a reputation as a highly regarded school in the Hunter, and was proud of a strong sense of community and commitment to its students and their families.
Geoff Millar was appointed Principal in 2005 and set about cementing and growing the school’s pastoral care and personal development structures. Geoff Millar reviewed the School’s fundamental values and promulgated the School’s values of: responsibility, integrity, respect, citizenship, courage and compassion.
Paul Teys was appointed Principal in 2008 and under his guidance HVGS continues to strive for academic excellence within a caring and value laden learning environment.
Throughout its history the school has emphasised pastoral care and the intrinsic worth of every learner as its priority. This remains unchanged today. What has changed is the development of impressive facilities, assets and a rich supportive learning environment.
